Small business initiative helps keep community strong

A new ‘shop local’ campaign has launched in Scone, offering free advertising to local businesses in a bid to connect shoppers with small, independently owned traders.

Buy Locally Scone is a website dedicated to strengthening the local economy, keeping the doors of small businesses open and providing plenty of information about promotions, sales and offers all in one spot.

“The aim of the site is not just another directory listing – there are plenty of those – but a ‘one stop shop’ for consumers to learn about what is available in their local area, and to encourage people to shop locally,” said Teresa Herbert, who initiated the project.

Free listings are available for businesses who operate in Scone, or service the Scone community, and there are also opportunities available for paid advertising on the site.

Mrs Herbert, who owns Scone business TotaleSolutions, said not only does shopping locally build the local economy, but it also creates jobs, a better shopping experience and it also supports community groups.

“On average, not-for-profit organisations receive 250% more support from small businesses than large businesses,” she said.

“You may also receive better customer service, because local businesses often hire people with a better understanding of the products they are selling and take more time to get to know customers.”
