The Hunter Wholefoods – Time to pass the baton
As consumers, we’re a wasteful lot.
Consider how many times you’ve bought more than you need, then tossed half of it in your rubbish bin. Now imagine everyone else doing this, in households across Australia. That’s an awful lot of garbage that goes into landfill and, from there, contributes to greenhouse gas emissions. And that’s not to mention the rubbish that ends up in our waterways and oceans, where it does untold harm to our marine life.
We can help address this problem by adopting the mantra: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. And that is exactly at the heart of The Hunter Wholefoods.
Opening in 2013 and originally owned by Campbells Corner’s previous landlords, The Hunter Wholefoods was started as a sustainable Health Foods & bulk Wholefoods store. The idea was for people to bring in their bags and jars and take home ethically sourced and sustainable products without the waste of unnecessary packaging etc.
The Hunter Wholefoods was then purchased and ran by Elaine Dargaville about 3 years ago. Elaine had been working for the previous owners for almost 12 months and came to love the store and its philosophies around sustainability. Ellaine has also created an overall ethos around supporting Australian owned companies and producers, as well as grassroots family and small businesses.
“Finding reputable and ethical products for the store has been extremely important to me when sourcing suppliers. But not just that, supporting those little people and families who are making these products and making them well.” Says Elaine.
Elaine stocks brands such as The Nut Shop, Honest to Goodness and Byron Bay Cookies.
Walking into the store you get a sense of natural goodness. It’s quite a lovely experience. You will find a brilliant selection of herbal teas, nuts, dried fruits, seeds, organic broth, handmade baskets, hats, bags, specialty chocolate and all sorts of natural, organics and ethically sourced products.
However, sadly, after almost 3 years the time has come for Elaine to pass the baton to someone else. Elaine is ready for a new direction in life and feels it’s time to let someone else with the drive and passion move a small business forward and into the future.

Elaine believes that for the right person with the drive to create something special – The Hunter Wholefoods is a wonderful opportunity. Managing and growing a small business takes passion, drive and hard work, but the idea and market is there. It will just take someone willing to give it their all to make it really happen.
