Celebrating International Women’s Day

Celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) in the Upper Hunter Shire at events in Merriwa, Murrurundi and Scone.

For more than a century IWD has been a day to celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women. In countries such as China, Russia, Vietnam and Bulgaria, IWD is a national holiday.

Upper Hunter Shire Council and Scone Neighbourhood Resource Centre will host a free evening function including a presentation on Women in Leadership, on Tuesday 8 March 2016 at the Council Chambers in Scone.

Men and women are invited to come along at 6.00pm, enjoy refreshments, live music and hear Upper Hunter Shire Councillors Deirdre Peebles, Lorna Driscoll and Lee Watts talk about women and leadership, progress towards equality; and their own experiences over a combined 50 years of service in local government.

Guests can mingle while enjoying a drink and finger food and a musical performance by members of the Upper Hunter Conservatorium of Music. Cr. Peebles, Cr Driscoll and Cr Watts will share insights into their motivations and work within Council, and will answer questions from the audience.

This is an unmissable evening for anyone with an interest in women’s perspectives on leadership or local government.

Anyone who has ever considered standing for Council elections will gain a greater understanding of the realities of local government. In NSW at the 2012 election, women made up only 36 percent of candidates, and 27 percent of elected Councillors (NSW Councillor and Candidate Report 2012 Local Government Elections).

Book your seat for this free event, 6.00pm Tuesday 8 March 2016 at the Scone Council Chambers, 135 Liverpool Street with Council’s Manager Community Services Kerri Cone on kcone@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au or phone 6540 1141.

In Merriwa there will be a luncheon with guest speaker Jane Watson from Scone Legal to talk about wills, Powers of Attorney and executors, hosted by the Merriwa Country Women’s Association (CWA) in partnership with Council.

The event is from 10.30am for an 11.00am start, Tuesday 8 March at the CWA Rooms, 159 Bettington Street and entry is a gold coin donation to the CWA Community Assistance Projects. For more information contact Jean Price on 6548 2456.

IWD arrives early in Murrurundi with a dinner and guest speakers from 6.00pm, Monday 7 March at the White Hart Hotel.

Speakers are Murrurundi Public School Principal Megan Druitt and artist, teacher and farmer Tania Hartigan.

Cost is $20 which includes a two course dinner. RSVP by Friday 4 March to Community Services Officer Heather Ranclaud on hranclaud@upperhunter.nsw.gov.au, phone 6540 1356 or drop into the Murrurundi office of Council.
