Melanie’s Matthews Family Jewellers is a story of family, history and community.
Melanie, owner of Melanie’s Matthews Family Jewellers continues a long-standing tradition first established by her Great Grandmother, Maude, who owned a jewellery store in Murwillumbah in the 1930s and 40s. Her Grandfather, Maude’s son, Norman, continued in the jewellery making industry becoming a well-loved watchmaker with his brother Basil, working in Maryborough in QLD before moving to Scone in 1955 to work for Sky Bernard & Co. In 1959 Norman and his wife, Frances bought that business – renaming it Matthews Jewellers, running it until their retirement in 1995.
Norm and Fran expanded to Muswellbrook around 1976, opening Lorraine’s Jewellers which was operated by son Stephen and then-wife Louise, before taking over the business for themselves. Norma d Fran continued to operate the business in Scone until their retirement, when Stephen took ownership of the Scone store. Stephen continued to operate the Scone store until 2007 when Melanie decided to continue the business in Scone.
It was important to Melanie to continue the Matthews name but to also put her own name in the family story – which was also a tradition when owners changed over the course of time. So in 2007, Melanie’s Matthews Family Jewellers was born. Melanie now has two stores, with Muswellbrook opening its doors in 2015.
With such a long history, the Matthews Jewellers name is well known and loved among the local community. Countless special moments have been shared by locals when that special occasion or proposal is shared. Melanie’s prides themselves on being able to help someone with the right piece for that special moment or occasion.

Like many of us, the business has struggled during the recent COVID lockdowns and thanks their customers for their valued loyalty and continued support. During lockdowns, Melanie’s continued working with customers, offering contactless collections, organising repairs etc. However, it has become apparent that not having an online store did somewhat limited access to their business – especially when their customers were unable to come into their stores. While it’s hoped there are no further lockdowns, something COVID has taught us all is that we can never be certain of the future. Melanie’s is looking at potential ways to help customers better access their products online and hopes to have something up and running in the future. Stay tuned!
